Selection is a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get.
For Australia's first one day international post-Ponting, the sinisterly named (for Brad Haddin at least) NSP opted to replace the 375 cap veteran in the pivotal number three position with a man with just three caps to his name.
That the game with Sri Lanka happened to be in Hobart in front of Ponting's adoring home crowd that had been denied the opportunity to bid adieu to their fallen hero meant that the pressure on Peter Forrest was ratcheted up even higher. This went past boiling point when Australia lost both openers cheaply.
So for Forrest to go out and hit a hundred speaks volumes. It wasn't the best or most fluent ODI hundred we've ever seen but it was runs Forrest, it was runs.
Another famous Forrest once concluded that "my Mama always said you've got to put the past behind you before you can move on," and that's exactly what Australia and Forrest seem to have done.
As chocolates go, Forrest's selection has so far turned out to be one of those with the delicious strawberry cream.
Brad Haddin is nougat. It seems that John Inverarity is none too keen on nougat.
