Thanks to Mahek, a regular commentator on this blog, we found out a very interesting stat this week about MS Dhoni's batting record as Indian captain.
As the table below shows, of players with more than 15 test innings as captain, Dhoni ranks only second to Donald Bradman with the startlingly good average of 71.85. We've written before that Dhoni is an excellent captain and it seems that the extra responsibility imbues rather than affects his batting.
The rest of the list of those that average 52 or over also makes interesting reading:
-
There are five current players including three current test captains on the list and with Andrew Strauss (50.73) and Graeme Smith (50.10) also averaging over 50 as captain, it suggests that scoring runs when captain is becoming easier
-
Arguably the most impressive name is that of Imran Khan, one of five Pakistan captains on the list, who not content with being one of the best bowlers in the World during his career, also averaged over 50 as captain.
-
Yet again Mahela Jayawardene shows how criminally underrated he is by the cricket media at large.
By the way, we'd also recommend following Mahek on Twitter or checking out his great blog Confessions of a Forced Spectator, which is mostly about cricket, when you get a chance. Thanks for the stat Mahek.
