In an era where footballers, pop stars, actors and for heaven's sake reality TV nonentities are too easily accorded hero status, it is worth remembering that there was a time when some of our sports stars were really worthy of being called heroes - and not just because of what they did on the field of play either.
One such man was Hedley Verity of Yorkshire, England and the Green Howards who was born this week in 1905 and who is the subject of our latest piece for All Out Cricket's rather fab web site.
