We’re not sure what Jacques Kallis had for breakfast this morning (although we can guess it was served on a large plate), but we hope it becomes a staple part of his diet.
Whilst we are happy to readily acknowledge that Kallis is a great batsman – you don’t score 12,000 Test runs at an average of over 57 without being exactly that – he is not one that we normally particularly enjoy watching at the Reverse Sweep.
Stodgy is the word that most readily comes to mind when trying to encapsulate a Kallis innings into one word, but his knock today in the 2nd Test at The Wanderers was anything but stodgy.
He came to the wicket when South Africa were 43/2 and proceeded to smash 54 off just 41 balls with 10 boundaries including two sixes.
It was all over in a blur but not before Kallis achieved something that we didn’t think was possible – upstaging Hashim Amla, who played Kallis’s usual stodgy role with some aplomb whilst Kallis was plundering the Australian bowling attack.
If this continues, we will have to start suspecting that his hair transplant was done with follicles gleaned from one of Virender Sehwag’s batting helmets.
