Ok, the headline may be a bit dramatic, but have no doubt that Marcus Trescothick would have been feeling the pressure when he walked out to bat at the Rose Bowl yesterday morning.
His Somerset side had been heavily backed to win their first County Championship in their long history this season, but had suffered defeat in their first two matches in Division 1 against Warwickshire and Lancashire.
And these weren't just defeats, they were absolute hammerings. Both by an innings and with the Warwickshire result in particular being especially ignominious - bowled out for 50 in their second innings in the space of just 88 deliveries, with the losing margin of an innings and 382 runs being the sixth largest margin of defeat in the Championship since 1921 and Somerset’s largest defeat since 1895.
Trescothick himself had scored the paltry total of 48 runs in four innings.
So to bat all day for 193 not out and to have ledhis side into a commanding position was some performance from Tresco.
Our large wager on Somerset winning the Championship may not be lost after all.
