Zimbabwe served notice last year that their cricket may be on the rise again with two wins over India and one over Sri Lanka in a triangular competition they hosted. Although the format of the competition has been designed to prevent the smaller teams progressing, Zimbabwe are likely to feel quietly confident that they could upset New Zealand and progress to the quarter-finals.
Strengths
Zimbabwe have some decent players in opener Brendan Taylor, captain Elton Chigumbura, wicket-keeper Tatendu Taibi and grisly spinner Ray Price. Their army of spinners and medium pacers will suit the pitches of the sub-continent.
Weaknesses
There is an obvious lack of strength in depth and they disappointed in the World T20 last year after similarly impressive performances in the warm-up matches where they beat Australia and Pakistan.
Main man
Elton Chigumbura is likely to lead from the front with middle order runs and wickets.
Look out for…
The antics of the meanest, toughest and most nasty spinner around – Ray Price sledges like Merv Hughes and as such is compulsive viewing.
Prediction
Although they may run New Zealand close, we tip Zimbabwe to fall at the first hurdle albeit with the consolation of wins over Kenya and Canada.
