Heroes: Younis Khan

 
As much as we recognise Younis Khan as a world-class batsman, that wouldn't normally qualify him for Reverse Sweep hero status. Nor would the fact that he is the only Pakistan captain of recent vintage to have been half-decent. Or even the fact that he doesn't appear to get on with Shoaib Malik.

No, Younis' inclusion as this week's hero is down to his dignified reaction to and ultimate victory against the ridiculous indefinite ban handed out by PCB Chairman and chief idiot Ijaz Butt earlier this year. Younis final triumph was confirmed this week when he was reinstated to the Pakistan test and ODI squads for the forthcoming series' against South Africa in the UAE.

He had successfully appealed against his ban back in June in time, so everyone including the Pakistan selectors thought, for him to be included in the party for the tour to England. But Chairman Butt(head) had other ideas and apparently required an apology from Younis before his readmission was rubber-stamped.

Younis refused to say sorry as he rightfully felt he had nothing to apologise for. Itwas hardly Younis' fault that Malik had formed a treacherous band of brothers who had vowed to undermine and conspire against his captaincy. So a long stand-off between the pair ensued.

We were impressed with Younis' dignity throughout the following months as Pakistan's cricket lurched from one disaster to another. Wedon't remember seeing anything in the press from Younis criticising the team or even the odious Butt. He merely maintained that he was available for and wanted to represent Pakistan again.

Finally this week, Butt appeared to buckle under political and selectorial pressure and Younis was back. He had to have a meeting with his bungling Chairman, but we doubt whether he apologised. In fact we hope that he made Butt grovel.

For dignity and being a shining beacon of virtue in the sea of manure that is Pakistan cricket, Younis Khan is a Reverse Sweep hero.
